Support expanded access to meetings held by local and regional bodies.

Send emails to Electronic Meetings Subcommittee of the VA Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Council

Under current VA law, local and regional bodies such as school boards and advisory commissions have limited ability to hold virtual meetings.

Expanding their ability to do so would remove transportation and childcare barriers to participation, and lead to more equitable and transparent government.

Last session, HB 2050 proposed reasonable improvements to electronic meeting access. Its companion bill was enacted in the VA Senate, but HB 2050 did not succeed in the Republican controlled House. Before it is considered again in 2024, the VA FOIA Council's Subcommittee on Electronic Meetings will make recommendations to the General Assembly.

Please show your support for expanded access by sending this email or writing your own. It should be titled, 'Advise the Council That You Support Expanding Electronic Meetings' and sent to: foiacouncil@dls.virginia.gov with a cc to april.breslaw@gmail.com.

Your comment will be posted at the bottom of the Virginia Freedom of Information Advisory Council website. If you don't want your email address to be posted with your comment, please copy the comment into a separate document and attach it to your email.
